Yosemite Valley is a broad mountain valley located along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, USA. This beautiful valley is the heart of Yosemite National Park. The Yosemite Valley lays claim to many of the park’s most popular attractions, so it is the destination of most visitors every year.

Each spring, when the snows begin to melt high up in the Sierras, the water forms into rivers which cascade down the mountain side and pour over many of the famous cliffs and ledges that Yosemite park is known for. As a result, Yosemite is also home to many of the most stunning waterfalls on earth.

Perhaps the most famous of these falls shares it’s name with the park itself. Yosemite Falls is a crowd favorite, and is actually made up of three separate falls. The Merced Lake flows above the valley and to the end of its canyon (known as Little Yosemite Valley,) where the “Giant Staircase” begins.

Hikers and backpackers love Yosemite Park. Many scenic nature trails lead out of Yosemite Valley. One popular trail is the John Muir Trail which covers 211 miles and ends near the summit of Mount Whitney. The Mist Trail provides a view of Nevada Fall and Vernal Falls. The Yosemite Falls Trail leads to the top of Yosemite Falls.

The Yosemite Valley is an ecosystem with much diversity and many unique attributes. The valley is a mix of thick pine forests and open grassy meadows surrounded by stately granite domes and spires and densely forested mountslopes.

Granite monoliths are a main distinguishing features of the park. The main structures can be seen from the valley floor including Half Dome and El Capitan. These cliffs tower above the valley floor. Cloud’s Rest stands at 9,926 feet, which is the highest point in the valley.

There are three developed areas in the valley where most of the hotels, restaurants, and shops are. Yosemite Village, Curry Village, and Yosemite Lodge have many quality accommodations and are on the bus route.

The valley also houses the Yosemite Museum and Indian Cultural Exhibit. The Ansel Adams Gallery is also in Yosemite Valley, where prints and cards by the famous photographer are sold.

The Yosemite Valley is the most popular destination at Yosemite National Park. One visit, and I’m sure you’ll understand why.

Unbelievable snowboard accident!

Many people are off to the snowy slopes at this time of year to enjoy some winter sports fun. While skiing and snowboarding are growing in popularity many people are unaware of the very real dangers that these sports present.

The rates of accidents for skiers and snowboarders are about the same. Recklessness has been cited as one primary cause of many collision related accidents. And reckless behaviour on the slopes is something that both skiers and snowboarders are guilty of. Both skiers and snowboarders can be equally reckless, putting others at risk.

One of the most common injuries that results from collisions is damage to the knee. But every season there are numerous incidents some of which are very serious indeed resulting in brain damage, paralysis and even death.

Here’s a brief look at the most common accidents that take place on the slopes each new season.

Collisions.

The skier responsibility code says that those on the slope ahead of you have right of way. Avoiding them is your responsibility. There are always people on the slopes who are oblivious to the code of skier responsibility or how to avoid collisions.

Collisions can result in minor injuries but, unfortunately, are often very serious with head to head contact resulting in broken noses, teeth knocked out and even fractured skulls. By far the most common injury resulting from collisions is damage to the legs.

And remember that collisions are not only between people. Snowboarders and skiers often run into stationary objects like trees, buildings and maintenance vehicles. When travelling at speed colliding with a stationary object can result in particularly serious injuries.

Falling.

Falling over is all part of what skiing and snowboarding are about. But falling is another way that many skiers damage their knees.

Avalanches.

Very few recreational skiers or snowboarders will ever have to negotiate an avalanche. Staying within the designated ski areas should be enough to keep you safe from avalanches.

If you are headed for some winters sports fun this season make certain that you have some good ski insurance or adventure travel insurance that will cover you in the event that you suffer injury on the slopes. Travel insurance should be at the top of your travel essentials list wherever you are going.
