One of the important things you will be offered to do by staying at Cairns Holiday Lodge is to visit The Great Barrier Reef from various angles. People who saw it say that is life changing experience, whether you diving or just sail with glass-bottomed ship. Do you know why?
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s major reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands running for more than 2,600 kilometres over an area of in the order of 344,400 square kilometres. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland.
The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space in addition to is the world’s biggest sole formation made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny coral polyps. In 1981 it was selected as a World Heritage Site because of the wide range of life. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.
The Great Barrier Reef provides a viable area for a diversity of life, as well as many vulnerable species.
Approximately thirty types of whales, dolphins, and porpoises have been documented in the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the Dwarf minke whale, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, and the humpback whale. Large populations of dugongs exist there.
Six varieties of sea turtles appear at the reef to breed – the green sea turtle, leatherback sea turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, flatback turtle and the olive ridley. Fifteen varieties of seagrass in beds attract the dugongs and turtles, & provide fish habitats.
Saltwater crocodiles exist in the mangrove and salt marshes along the coast close to the reef.
Around 125 species of shark, stingray, skates or chimaera live on the reef.Roughly 5,000 species of mollusk have been witnessed on the reef.
There is also forty-nine species of pipefish and nine species of seahorse and at least seven species of frog inhabit the islands.
215 species of birds (including 22 species of seabirds and 32 species of shorebirds) visit the reef or nest or roost on the islands, including the white-bellied sea eagle and roseate tern.
The islands of the Great Barrier Reef also possess 2,195 recognized plant species. 17 species of sea snake reside on the Great Barrier Reef in tepid waters up to 50 meters deep. None found in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area are endemic, nor are any endangered.
Over 1,500 fish species reside on the reef, as well as the clownfish, red bass, red-throat emperor, and several varieties of snapper and coral trout.
Four hundred coral species, both hard corals and soft corals inhabit the reef.
5 hundred sorts of marine algae or seaweed live on the reef, as well as thirteen species which create calcareous mounds up to 100 meters wide, forming mini-ecosystems on their facade which have been associated to rainforest cover.
owing to its biodiversity temperate clear waters and ease of access from the tourist boats, the reef is a exceptionally popular destination, in particular for scuba diver enthusiasts.
A variety of boat tours and cruises are offered, from single day trips, to longer voyages. From dinghies to super-yachts are the boat sizes range. Glass- bottomed boats and underwater observatories are also popular, as are helicopter flights, and all offers will come at your door at the Cairns Holiday Lodge.
