Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Travel

Over the past few decades air travel has been becoming popular among people. There are a wide variety of reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity including convenience and safety.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

Pollution is the biggest problem caused by air travel.  Emission of greenhouse gases by the airplanes into our atmosphere results in things like global warming.  Global warming increases the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and people who want to avoid such a rise in temperature are alarmed by this effect.  Many airlines are becoming friendlier to the environment to prevent the effect of global warming. Many airlines take action for retrofitting winglet that is usually intended to improve the efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft thereby reducing greenhouse gas emission. Airlines also spend millions of dollars upgrading their fleets to newer and more efficient aircraft.

Disadvantage: High Cost

People refrain from traveling by air because of the high cost of air travel. In many instances it is inexpensive to travel by car to certain destinations instead of going by air. There are ways to get around this by taking advantage of discount

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

Many people avoid flying for specific reasons. If anyone has travelled in a flight which has hit an air pocket you will see that they have gone through a lot of rough weather due to turbulence and this can be rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

The greatest advantage about air travel is that it is much faster to reach between places as compared to other means of travel; however these places have to be connected by air. Driving in United States between places could take you a number of days whereas you could cover this distance in a few hours by flight. Since you are saving a number of days by flying you can enjoy longer vacations.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

Another major advantage in traveling by air is that you can travel to far off destinations which are difficult to traverse either by road or any other means.  traveling to any destination in the world is possible if you travel by air. In the event of your opting for other modes of transportation you will find the travel time is quite long as compared to flying between these destinations.

Advantage:  Safety

When you consider various modes of travel, you will find that travel by air is the safest. Car accidents wherein people die happen in thousands every year. It is also not uncommon to read about train derailments as well.  This is not to say that air accidents do not take place; however frequency of such accidents is very small.  For many people safety is the prime consideration for choosing air travel as compared to other form of transportation.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

There are a number of things to think about when considering traveling to Africa. It does not matter which country you want to visit I’m sure your preferred mode of travel is air. The airline industry now has a many players in it you have many options to choose from when it comes to the airline that you will choose.

If you want to make great savings on the airfares you can think about some of the following points that I will mention below. Gone are the days when it was the major airlines operating on most routes, smaller airlines have entered the market and the comepetirion has forced air fares to come down.

The thing is you need to time the time of your visit. Air fares are always changing and it becomes difficult to get a quote for a particular time in the future. You might be able to get an estimate however. As the week progresses and the year changes the prices also too vary.

Airfares for week day travel are always cheaper than fares for weekend travel. Most people reserve traveling for over the weekends and this is referred to as the peak period of travel. Since the seats on any flight are always limited the prices tend to be higher. The time of the year is another thing that affects airfares. Different airlines will have a different interpretation when it comes to what is peak season and what is not.

You will be able to get current airfares, information on available discounts and routes at any one of these:flights from durban to east london south africa cape town to Johannesburg, distance from cape town to bloemfontein

Be sure that you have got the current quote when you are making a booking. You can book your ticket by making a reservation at the airlines ticket office or make a booking by phone. However you will always get a discount by making an online booking. If a booking is made online the airline does not use any personnel, stationery and does not print anything so they save money. This information can be got from any tour operator or travel guide agency.

The no-frills airline, launched by Southwest in the 80s, is no longer a U.S. phenomena. Low cost airlines are popping up around the globe. They are taking over domestic and international routes throughout Europe and Asia and select routes in South America, Africa and the Middle East. A few even operate international flights. And many make money.

Yet there is a flip side to cheap tickets. Travelers can spend a significant amount of time scouring the web for the best deal. Not all countries have a low cost airline and not all airports are serviced by a discount carrier.

Many low-fare companies cannot be booked through on-line agencies or consolidators, such as Expedia and Orbitz. Promotional offers are usually limited and expire on a daily if not hourly basis.

And when you find a flight, it is difficult to compare prices. The following airfare tips will reduce your search time and help prepare you for any additional travel time.

Research

  • Determine which carriers service the route you wish to fly. Most airport web sites include route maps as well as a list of airlines. Alternatives will only become apparent if you check the web site of both airports, arrival and departure.
  • If you are traveling abroad, identify local on-line agencies and portals of discount airfares.
  • Low cost flights often make use of secondary airports. Verify distance and ground transportation before you book. Most low-fare airlines and many portals provide such information on their web sites.
  • Many low-cost airlines offer point-to-point service. It may not be possible to check-in for a second flight at a transit desk. So you may need to build-in some time between flights to accommodate any passport formalities, get your luggage and check-in for the next part of your trip.
  • Security precautions introduced by major credit card companies may limit your ability to book flights on foreign web sites.

Getting the Best Deal On Airfare

  • Initiate your search with on-line agencies and consolidators.
  • Subscribe to the airline and to the portal’s newsletter.
  • Utilize services that enable you to set a price, such as the Orbitz “Deal Detector”. Orbitz will send an email if fares on the route you select drop to the price level you set. They provide the service for free.
  • Use the portal as a reference tool. Book directly with airline. This may lessen the service charge without affecting the airfare.

Comparing Fares

  • Low cost fares are often quoted on a one-way basis.
  • Taxes, surcharges, and handling fees are not always included in the original price. Click through to the final page to effectively compare airfares and fees.
  • Airfare may be quoted in the airline or consolidator’s local currency only. Converting fares to a single currency will facilitate comparison.

Before You Depart

  • Pack a lunch or a snack and drinks for all. Food and beverage are no longer included in the price of the airfare!
  • Come to the airport early if you want to sit next to your spouse and the kids. Seating is likely to be open and boarding is oftentimes based on the order in which passengers’ check-in.
