The no-frills airline, launched by Southwest in the 80s, is no longer a U.S. phenomena. Low cost airlines are popping up around the globe. They are taking over domestic and international routes throughout Europe and Asia and select routes in South America, Africa and the Middle East. A few even operate international flights. And many make money.

Yet there is a flip side to cheap tickets. Travelers can spend a significant amount of time scouring the web for the best deal. Not all countries have a low cost airline and not all airports are serviced by a discount carrier.

Many low-fare companies cannot be booked through on-line agencies or consolidators, such as Expedia and Orbitz. Promotional offers are usually limited and expire on a daily if not hourly basis.

And when you find a flight, it is difficult to compare prices. The following airfare tips will reduce your search time and help prepare you for any additional travel time.

Research

  • Determine which carriers service the route you wish to fly. Most airport web sites include route maps as well as a list of airlines. Alternatives will only become apparent if you check the web site of both airports, arrival and departure.
  • If you are traveling abroad, identify local on-line agencies and portals of discount airfares.
  • Low cost flights often make use of secondary airports. Verify distance and ground transportation before you book. Most low-fare airlines and many portals provide such information on their web sites.
  • Many low-cost airlines offer point-to-point service. It may not be possible to check-in for a second flight at a transit desk. So you may need to build-in some time between flights to accommodate any passport formalities, get your luggage and check-in for the next part of your trip.
  • Security precautions introduced by major credit card companies may limit your ability to book flights on foreign web sites.

Getting the Best Deal On Airfare

  • Initiate your search with on-line agencies and consolidators.
  • Subscribe to the airline and to the portal’s newsletter.
  • Utilize services that enable you to set a price, such as the Orbitz “Deal Detector”. Orbitz will send an email if fares on the route you select drop to the price level you set. They provide the service for free.
  • Use the portal as a reference tool. Book directly with airline. This may lessen the service charge without affecting the airfare.

Comparing Fares

  • Low cost fares are often quoted on a one-way basis.
  • Taxes, surcharges, and handling fees are not always included in the original price. Click through to the final page to effectively compare airfares and fees.
  • Airfare may be quoted in the airline or consolidator’s local currency only. Converting fares to a single currency will facilitate comparison.

Before You Depart

  • Pack a lunch or a snack and drinks for all. Food and beverage are no longer included in the price of the airfare!
  • Come to the airport early if you want to sit next to your spouse and the kids. Seating is likely to be open and boarding is oftentimes based on the order in which passengers’ check-in.

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

Over the past few decades air travel has been becoming popular among people. This increase in popularity has been due to the convenience and safety one could enjoy by traveling by air.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

The major shortcoming of air travel is the pollution caused by it. Airplanes are responsible for sending greenhouse gases into our atmosphere and these gases contribute for things like global warming.  Global warming increases the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and people who want to avoid such a rise in temperature are alarmed by this effect.  ) Many airlines are trying to become more environmentally conscious these days.  One of the ways in which this is achieved by many of these airlines is to retrofit winglet devices that make the aircraft fuel efficient.  Apart from this the airlines invest a large sum of money to replace their old aircraft by fuel efficient aircraft.

Disadvantage: High Cost

One major disadvantage in traveling by air is its cost. It is cheaper to fill up gas in your car and drive to your desired destination instead of going by flight. One way of solving the high cost air travel problem is to take advantage of discount

.  Ultimate decision for flying or driving is dependent on whether you get a good deal on the airfare or not.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

Many people simply do not like to fly.  If anyone has travelled in a flight which has hit an air pocket you will see that they have gone through a lot of rough weather due to turbulence and this can be rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

One of the major advantages in air travel is that it is able to take you to any of the places where airports are available at a much faster rate than any other forms of transportation.  Flying between two destinations in United States which are connected by air takes a few hours whereas going by car between these destinations might take a number of days. This gives you extra days for enjoying your vacations because you save a number of days by traveling by air.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

It is possible to cover long distances by flight in a reasonably short time whereas it is difficult to cover far off destinations by other modes of transportation. traveling to any destination in the world is possible if you travel by air. Some of these flights might prove to be quite long but they are still much shorter than if you had to rely on alternative means of transportation.

Advantage:  Safety

When you consider various modes of travel, you will find that travel by air is the safest. We normally hear more about car accidents taking place as compared to air accidents. On the other hand you find that the occurrence of train accidents is also quite common. Air travel related disasters do happen but they occur much less frequently.  For many people safety is the prime consideration for choosing air travel as compared to other form of transportation.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.
