South Uist is located in the group of islands known as the Outer Hebrides (and also the Western Isles of Scotland. Sadly the course was damaged and it desperately needs restoring before it can be played upon but you will find many other golf courses across the islands.

Obviously South Uist features masses of opportunities to indulge in a diverse range of sports. Surfing and other water sports are immensely popular and virtually everyone can go walking. Besides golf the most popular sport remains fishing though more cyclists appear year upon year.

Although the island of South Uist doesn’t feature a big list of galleries and museums it has sufficient to keep visitors entertained during wet weather. Places such as Kildonan Museum focus upon the history of South Uist and its association with Flora MacDonald and Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie).

There are a selection of things to see and do in the port including the medieval town house known as the Castle of St John situated in the heart of Stranraer. The Castle of St John was constructed in the year fifteen ten as a residence for Ninian Adair of Kilhurst, the Laird of Wigtownshire. The castle was restored, in the years 1988/89, by the district council of Wigtown who opened it to the public in nineteen ninety.

Another place to visit close to the town of Stranraer is Castle Kennedy Gardens. The castle acts as the centrepiece of the garden which are situatedon a hill between 2 lochs (it is important to know that access to the ruined castle is no longer allowed. Castle Kennedy’s Gardens extend across 75 acres. If you want you can buy plants from a shop which has reared them from seeds gathered from the garden.

A further attractive tourist attraction to visit is Glenluce Abbey, about 7 miles from Stranraer. Even though it is in ruins (in truth the most ruined of three of Cistercian monasteries found in this region of Scotland) it has a superb 15th Chapter House. Other places worth visiting include, the Mull of Galloway, the Machars, Port Logan and Portpatrick.
