Interview from Stansted Protest

More than fifty eco-protesters from the climate action group Plane Stupid have been arrested at Stansted airport today after occupying a runway at around 03:15 this morning.

Over 50 flights, all from Ryannair, have been cancelled or delayed due to the protesters who occupied a secure area near the runway. Plane stupid protesters were taken away by police after 50 were accused of aggravated trespass, 3 accused of attempting to gain access to a restricted area and 4 of conspiracy to commit a public nuisance.

Protesters had gained access to the site using bolt-cutters and then built themselves a small stockade, near to the runway, using concrete blocks and security fencing. They then chained themselves to the fencing.

The British government gave the go-ahead to controversial plans for the further expansion of Stansted Airport in October. The British Airports Authority who own the airport have stated that they want to increase passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million in just one year. More passengers would result in a substantial increase in the number of flights from the airport from 241,000 to 264,000.

While supporters of the controversial expansion have spoken of the many new jobs that would be provided the eco-activists have reminded people of the environmental damage that would be caused. An aircraft flying out of Stansted airport is, on average, responsible for around 41.58 tonnes of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

One young female protestor said:

“We’re here because our parents’ generation has failed us and its now down to young people to stop climate change by whatever peaceful means we have left. We’re afraid of what the police might do to us, we’re afraid of going to jail but nothing scares us as much as the threat of runaway climate change. We’ve thought through the consequences of what we’re doing here but we’re determined to stop as many tonnes of CO2 as we can.”

Matthew Knowles from the Society of British Aerospace Companies has stated that the protesters are ignoring the reality around aviation and climate change. He pointed out how aircraft today are 70% more fuel efficient than they were 50 years ago and went on to say that it is about time that these ill-informed protests stopped.

Another young Plane Stupid protester at Stansted airport said:

“We fully appreciate the scale of what we’ve done here today and we know many people will struggle to understand why we’ve done it, but the Arctic ice cap is disappearing, the seas are rising and our last chance to save our future is vanishing. With people taking more flights in Britain than anywhere else on earth, we have a unique responsibility to tackle emissions from flying.”

One of the passengers whose flight was delayed by the action has said that not only did the protest break all of the safety rules, it also disrupted peoples lives. He went on to say that he hoped the authorities would treat the protestors very seriously.

Hamdi Yazici, a Turkish 41 year old, has been sentenced to 4 months in prison after he walked to the front of a plane with a bag while chanting 'Allah'.

The plane, which was travelling from Istanbul to Stansted Airport in October last year when the Turkish man frightened passengers when he got up, drunk, and started chanting 'Allah' while walking to the front. In court the judge was told how it took 6 members of cabin crew to restrain the man and wait until the flight landed and then the police could take over.

Laura Harris, the court judge said: “I am quite sure it was extremely distressing and alarming for those passengers.

“They didn’t know what you were planning to do when you started to walk down to the front. For all they knew you could have been a very dangerous man.”

The man admitted that he was drunk on the plane and he has now been sentenced to 4 months in prison.

So this got my thinking, what are the top 10 things you should not say on an aircraft? After some Googling and some chuckling, here is my top 10 list of things you shouldn’t say on a plane:

  1. It’s not like I have a bomb.
  2. Allah.
  3. Hi Jack! (ensure you say ‘Hello Jack’ if you’re travelling with jack)
  4. Is it time yet? (repeatedly)
  5. That’s not my bag beeping, it’s me
  6. You may not want to drop my bag
  7. Will Osama be proud of me?
  8. Explode
  9. 3…2…1…boom
  10. Go..GO..Go!! (while yelling)

So, that’s my top ten list of things not to say on a plane, that Turkish guy should have done some Googling to know he shouldn’t have said that. Just ensure you don't uetter any of those words next time you fly, it could land you in some trouble.
